RSS Feeds

I have been searching for RSS feeds from Librarians. I had the most difficult time using the sites that were given. When using those, I ended up with library job postings, some postings on books, but not a direct link to a site that I was interested in reading.

So, I cheated. I googled. It is always a great standby. I found a website that had links to others that I liked. Then, I just clicked on that lovely yellow RSS box. And, vola, I added them to bloglines.

Bloglines....Smoglines

This exercise clogged my brain. There are so many RSS feeds out there and so little time to read them. It is quite nice to have an application that will help sort them out for me, but I guess my question is, "How often will I go there?". Answer: I'm not sure.

I have an RSS feeder on my firefox browser. I think I read things occasionally. I am usually running around full-tilt that I don't have time, or don't make the time, to keep up with my readings. It is probably the latter of the two. I have had a difficult time doing the Web2.0 exercises, but I think that if I make time on Monday mornings, I can do it. Maybe I'll make Tuesday morning, my RSS feed reader time.

It took me a while, but I was finally able to figure out how to allow the public to read my blogline account. Here is my link: http://www.bloglines.com/public/EllieS. It isn't anything interesting, but I will try to add my regular RSS feeds when I get home tonight.

New Technology

In a previous life, I was created some manuals for computer software. I worked for a very small software firm. We were always pinching pennies because we had yet to "make it big". While creating the manuals, I needed screen shots to help emphasize the point that I needed to make. I worked hard on creating screen shots. I would do a screen shot. Then open it in paint and then painstakingly erase or enhance different parts of it. I still remember those days.

The last few weeks, I have been working on a training module. I am lucky enough to have Macromedia Captivate installed on my computer. The module that I created was to help students access ERIC (CSA) and to do a search. I had so much fun that I didn't realize how many scree shots I had created. I ended up with almost 200. It was a bit too large to keep a student interested. I ended up paring it down to about 30 shots. I then worked on the timing of the module and dialog boxes that I could pop up. I enjoyed working with it immensely. It was easy and I could get the shots that I wanted.

When it comes to technology, just jump on in. Oftentimes, you will find that it will make your life and your projects much easier. I wish that I was able to work with better technology in my old job. But, we are lucky enough here at NSU to be able to acquire some really nice software applications. We should try to use them or else they might disappear.

This is the cutest. It is quite fun. But, unfortunately, this is as creative as I get.

There are some really great applications that make being creative easy. I think that we do not take enough time out of our day to try them.

I visited Flickr Color Pickr. Ok. I giggled when I first read the name of this. I would have been on the floor if some of the words were rearranged. Ok. Enough of the juvenile blogging.

There were some beautiful pictures associated with the color chart. I kept trying to find strange....ur...unusual colors. Some of the unusual colors had the most beautiful pictures. As I stated above, I am not the most creative person, however, the color pickr (giggle) will make it easy for me to create screens or even re-do my blog so that it is much more colorful.

Well....That was easy. I kept putting off this assignment because I was too busy. I guess that was a dumb excuse. I really need to stop procrastinating and do the exercises.

7-1/2 habits of life long learners

I believe that the majority of NSU staffers are life long learners. I am not just talking about those who take classes. It is also those people who start a new hobby, who buy a new tech toy that they know nothing about, or those people who decide to visit a place that they have never been and can't even speak the language. I believe life long learners are those people who think of life as an adventure and explore. Who cares if we end up on our collective butts every now and then, it was definitely fun getting there.

Finally!!

I never thought I would create my blog. I kept trying to come up with really cool names. I think that when your back is against the wall, that is when you become the most creative. I am not sure that 'AlvieGirl' is truly creative, but I will take what I can get.

I am looking forward to all of the assignments. I may change my tune after a couple of weeks. Who knows?
